Honoring the Survivors: Research Team Discovers Video Footage of 'Comfort Women'

The Glendale Comfort Women Peace Monument

In 2015, the governments of South Korea and Japan entered into an agreement acknowledging the plight of the 'comfort women.'  As part of the resolution, Japan offered a public apology and one billion yen ($8.3 million) in compensation to Korean women who were forced to work in Japanese brothels during WWII.

While the settlement reflected enormous progress in Japan’s willingness to address the issue, tensions have lingered, as evidenced by the controversy over the ‘comfort woman’ statue in Busan and the current South Korean president's attention to the issue.   In July 2017, Seoul National University’s Human Rights Center confirmed the discovery of video footage of Korean ‘comfort women.’

KALAGNY has played an integral part in the ongoing open discussion about the war crimes committed against these women.  We hope to educate our members and our community so that these atrocities will be neither forgotten nor repeated.
